Why You should DONATE YOUR VOTE

Advocating for Systematic Change

From Emancipation Initiative:

Our community members who are incarcerated inside of prisons are excluded from participating in elections and all other aspects of the political process. This means that the policies that ultimately determine their quality of life, their release dates, their sentencing, and their rights (and lack thereof) are decided entirely by other people. The #DonateYourVote campaign aims to reverse this injustice by allowing people on the outside to donate their vote to people on the inside. Your donation allows the voices of our community members on the inside to be heard in this election cycle.

In 2018 thousands of people across the country protested on both sides of the wall calling for voting rights to be restored to all people on parole, probation and in prison. While we wait for states to adopt legislation that would enable this, we cannot wait to include the voices marginalized by felony disenfranchisement. If you’re on the fence thinking about if you should participate here are some reasons why you should

  • Your disillusioned by the election process

  • You don’t believe that disenfranchisement is an appropriate punishment for people in prison.

  • You believe all citizens, regardless of their background or incarceration status should have voting rights

  • You believe that participating in elections can contribute positively to an individual's rehabilitation

  • You weren’t planning to vote anyway

  • You don’t like any of the candidates

  • You don’t believe our democracy accurately represents everyone in our country

  • You believe that prison gerrymandering is anti-democracy

  • You want to be a part of radical change!

If any of these apply to you then please join us by filling out the form below to sign up to donate your vote.

In the State of Michigan, if you are currently serving a sentence in jail or prison you may not exercise your right to vote, even if you are lawfully registered. Michigan also prohibits its citizens being held in jails and prisons from registering to vote, unless they are still awaiting trial or sentencing. The Michigan Donate Your Vote Campaign [name subject to change] seeks to give all Michigan voters a chance to participate in the democratic process, even if they do not have the right to vote.

The Donate Your Vote Campaign partners citizens who are in jail or prison (inside-partner) with eligible and registered voters who are not in jail or prison (outside-voter) who have volunteered to vote according to how their inside-partner would vote. The program is completely voluntary; the voter-on-the-outside is in no way required to vote in a particular way—their vote is 100% their own. All that the Donate Your Vote Campaign does is facilitate communication between a citizen-on-the-inside and a voter-on-the-outside that might not have otherwise existed without the program. Ultimately, it is up to the eligible voter to decide for whom they will vote, but we are providing them the opportunity to hear from fellow citizens whose voices are too often disregarded and silenced.
